Volunteer Information

Volunteers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ethnic groups. One thing volunteers do have in common is their eagerness to make a difference...to count...to enhance another's life.

Whether it be through relieving nursing staff from everyday tasks such as assembling admission packets in our Volunteer Workroom or helping to file in our business office -- there are may ways in which volunteers ease the process!

"I like being involved in community health projects because it gives me a chance to emphasize my personal values in the delivery of healthcare, education and prevention. When I'm volunteering, I get to sit one-on-one with people and share information with them which, if they apply it to their lives, can help keep them out of the hospital. It's very rewarding. "

- Susan F. Penngelly, Nurse

Home assignments are increasing in demand. Individuals who find themselves with free time on the weekends or early morning hours prefer to work at projects on their "own time". This also is a great way for volunteers who are homebound to contribute to the flow of our organization. Projects can include telephone calls, mailings or more creative tasks such as sewing or stamping assignments.

Our annual Flu and Pneumonia program is reliant upon the service of volunteers. These seasonal volunteers (September through January) greet the public, assist in filling out paperwork and complete Medicare and cash/check transactions at the flu clinic sites. We also have a team of licensed volunteer nurses who assess our clients and administer the flu shots.

Volunteers are the heart of Hospice! Our hospice volunteer program is staffed with ordinary people who have been called to service. It is their understanding of the hospice philosophy that draws these volunteers to aid a dying client and their families. Volunteers are required to attend a comprehensive training and complete a background check. Hospice volunteers report great satisfaction from giving the gift of “presence” to the hospice clients and their families.

We offer two Craft Clubs. The objective of the club is to create small tokens of "sunshine" for our hospice clients. Visiting staff enthusiastically delivers such items. The club meets once a month in Wyomissing and in Pottstown.
