The flu is a viral infection of the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and lungs affecting all ages. The flu season can last well into April. Thousands die each year in the U.S. from influenza and related complications. Experts agree that getting a flu shot is the best protection available against headaches, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue and weakness associated with the flu. Pneumococcal disease is a major leading cause of death throughout the world and a major cause of pneumonia, bactermia, meningitis, middle ear infections, and sinusitis. It is to blame for up to 40,000 deaths each year in the United States. Approximately 50% of these deaths can be prevented through use of the vaccine. The pneumonia vaccine can be given at the same time as the flu vaccine.
